Seasonal Cleaning Checklist For Summer Rentals
4 min read.
Summer brings sunshine, fresh air, and the perfect excuse to give your rental a much-needed refresh. Whether you’re prepping for guests, settling into a new lease, or just maintaining your home, seasonal cleaning is a great way to keep your space comfortable and clutter-free. This renter-friendly summer checklist will help you tackle the key areas, regardless of whether renovations or landlord approval are needed.
Refresh Windows and Screens
Open windows are one of the joys of summer, but dust, pollen, and bugs can quickly build up.
Wipe down windowsills and frames
Clean glass with a streak-free window cleaner
Gently vacuum or rinse window screens to remove dust and pollen
Check that the screens are securely in place
Deep Clean Fans and Air Vents
Ceiling fans, standing fans, and vents can spread dust if not cleaned regularly
Dust and wipe fan blades and grilles
Vacuum air vents and wipe down any visible HVAC covers.
Replace or clean any removable filters on portable fans or A/C units
If your rental has central air, ask your landlord if they handle filter replacements
Clean Out the Fridge and Freezer
Summer means BBQs, picnics, and leftovers, so give your fridge some extra love.
Toss expired condiments and unused leftovers
Wipe down shelves and bins with warm, soapy water
Defrost your freezer if it’s building up frost
Vacuum the coils behind or beneath the unit if accessible and safe
Lighten Up Common Areas
Clutter can make small spaces feel stuffy, especially during hot months.
Rotate or remove heavy throw blankets and dark fabrics
Wipe down baseboards, light switches, and high-touch surfaces
Swap in light, breathable textiles like cotton for a breezier vibe
Tidy Outdoor Spaces
If your rental includes a balcony, patio, or shared outdoor area, give it a summer spruce-up.
Sweep away debris and rinse floors with water if allowed
Clean patio furniture with mild soap and water
Remove cobwebs from corners and railing edges
Add renter-friendly plants or lights to create a welcoming space
A summer cleaning routine doesn’t have to be overwhelming; just a few focused tasks can make your rental feel fresh, inviting, and ready for the season. Whether you’re staying cool indoors or entertaining, a clean space sets the stage for a relaxing and enjoyable summer.
