5 Summer Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Rental Cool
2 min read.
As temperatures rise, keeping your rental cool can become a top priority. Whether you have air conditioning or not, there are easy ways to help your space stay comfortable and energy-efficient during the hottest months of the year. These five summer maintenance tips are simple, renter-friendly, and can even help save on utility bills.
Use Fans Strategically
Ceiling fans and portable fans can do more than move air; they can also help cool it. Set ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise in the summer to push cool air downward. Box fans or standing fans placed near windows in the evening can help bring in cooler air, while fans near doorways can circulate it throughout the unit. Don’t forget to clean fan blades regularly for best performance.
Block Out the Heat
Sunlight streaming through windows might brighten your space, but it also brings in heat. Use blackout curtains, thermal drapes, or even temporary window films to reflect heat and block UV rays. Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day, typically from late morning to early evening, to naturally reduce indoor temperatures.
Maintain or Clean Air Conditioners
If your unit includes an air conditioner, whether it’s central air, a wall-mounted system, or a window unit, keep it in good working condition. Clean or replace filters as needed (check monthly during periods of heavy use), and clear away any dust or debris from the vents. If you’re responsible for a window or portable unit, ensure it’s properly sealed to prevent hot air from entering.
Unplug Heat-Producing Devices
Appliances and electronics generate more heat than you might expect. Turn off unused devices and unplug items such as computers, chargers, and lamps when they are not in use. Consider cooking with an air fryer, slow cooker, or grill to avoid heating the kitchen with your oven or stovetop.
Check for Air Leaks
Even in a rental, it’s worth checking for small gaps around windows and doors where hot air can sneak in. Use removable weather stripping or draft stoppers to seal problem areas temporarily. These solutions are renter-friendly and easy to remove at the end of your lease, but they can make a big difference in maintaining a cool interior.
A little summer maintenance can go a long way in keeping your rental cool, comfortable, and cost-effective. By taking small steps to manage heat and airflow, you can beat the summer heat.
