Moving into a new rental is exciting, but the first week can also feel busy. Between unpacking, organizing, setting up services, and learning about your new property, there is a lot to remember.
This is a great opportunity to focus on making your new home comfortable, organized, and functional.
Step 1: Walk Through Your New Rental
Before unpacking, take a few minutes to check the condition of your rental. Look at the walls, floors, doors, windows, appliances, plumbing, and other fixtures. Take photos or videos of any existing damage for your records.
Check for:
Marks, scratches, or stains
Leaks or plumbing concerns
Doors or windows that do not close or lock properly
Appliances that are not working
Electrical outlets or lights that are not working
Other maintenance issues
If something needs attention, report it to your property management team. Documenting existing damage before you fully unpack can help keep a clear record of the rental’s condition.
Step 2: Clean
Before unpacking your belongings, take some time to clean the areas where you will be storing and using your things. Cleaning an empty rental can be easier because you do not have to move furniture or boxes around.
Focus on the areas you will use the most, especially the kitchen and bathroom. Wipe down countertops, cabinets, shelves, and other surfaces. Clean the inside of the refrigerator and cupboards before filling them with food and dishes. In the bathroom, clean the toilet, sink, shower or tub, and other frequently used surfaces.
You may also want to sweep or vacuum floors and clean any areas that need extra attention before your belongings are put away.
Consider having these basic cleaning supplies available:
All-purpose cleaner
Disinfecting wipes or spray
Microfiber cloths or paper towels
Broom, dustpan, or vacuum
Dish soap and sponges
Bathroom and toilet cleaner
Garbage bags
You do not need to deep clean every part of the rental immediately. Start with the spaces you will use most and work through the rest as you settle in.
Step 3: Set Up Your First-Night Essentials
Keep your first-night essentials together in a few clearly labelled boxes or bags so the items you need right away are easy to find.
Consider including:
Toilet paper and towels
Soap and toiletries
Phone chargers
A change of clothes
Bedding and pillows
Basic cleaning supplies
Garbage bags
Important documents
Keeping these items easy to access can make your first night much more comfortable.
Step 4: Make Your Main Spaces Functional
You do not need to unpack everything at once. Start with the areas you use most, such as your sleeping area, bathroom, kitchen, and main living space.
Set up your bed and bedding first, organize your bathroom essentials, and unpack enough kitchen supplies to prepare simple meals. Once the basics are ready, you can gradually work through less frequently used belongings. Prioritizing high-use spaces can help make the rental functional without feeling like you need to finish everything immediately.
Step 5: Update Your Address and Services
Take some time to update your address with important organizations and accounts, such as:
Banks and credit card providers
Government services
Employer or school
Insurance providers
Online shopping and delivery accounts
Subscription services
If needed, arrange mail forwarding from your previous address.
You should also confirm that any services you are responsible for, such as electricity, water, internet, or tenant insurance, are properly set up. Review your rental agreement or contact your property management team if you are unsure what is included. Taking care of these updates early can help prevent missed mail or interruptions to services.
Step 6: Get Familiar With Your Property
Your first week is a good time to learn how your new property works.
If you live in a building or shared community, locate important areas such as:
Garbage and recycling
Mailboxes
Laundry facilities
Parking
Building entrances and exits
Package pickup areas
Shared amenities
Review any property guidelines related to visitors, parking, pets, noise, garbage disposal, or shared spaces as well. Knowing where these areas are and understanding the property guidelines can make your new rental easier to navigate.
Step 7: Organize and Unpack
Before focusing on décor, organize your closets, cupboards, bathroom storage, cleaning supplies, and other frequently used items.
Then, unpack one room or area at a time. Starting with the essentials and saving décor or final furniture placement for later can make the process feel more manageable.
As you unpack, consider donating, recycling, or disposing of items you no longer need.
Finally, Make Your Rental Feel Like Home
By the end of your first week, your rental should be comfortable and functional, even if a few boxes remain.
Now you can begin adding personal touches, such as:
Photos or artwork
Throw pillows and blankets
Renter-friendly décor
Indoor plants
You do not need to buy everything right away. Spending some time in your new space can help you decide what you need. Moving into a new rental does not mean everything needs to be finished right away. By focusing on the essentials and taking things one step at a time, you can make the transition easier and enjoy settling into your new home.
