Apartment Etiquette Every Renter Should Know

3 min read.

Living in an apartment building means sharing space with others. While this can foster a strong sense of community, it also requires residents to show consideration and respect. Good apartment etiquette helps maintain a comfortable environment for everyone and can prevent unnecessary conflicts with neighbours or property management.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the most important apartment etiquette guidelines renters should follow to create a positive living experience.

Be Mindful of Noise Levels

Noise is a common challenge in apartment life. Shared walls, ceilings, and floors mean sound travels more easily than in detached homes.

Keep music, TV, and conversation at reasonable levels, especially in the mornings and evenings. Most buildings have quiet hours starting around 10 p.m. Remember, noise travels and affects neighbours.

Respect Shared Spaces

Common areas—hallways, lobbies, elevators, laundry rooms, parking—are shared. Keeping them clean is essential etiquette.

Don’t leave personal items or block walkways. Dispose of garbage properly and follow recycling guidance. Small gestures—holding the elevator, cleaning laundry areas—help create a welcoming environment.

Be Considerate with Guests

Friends and family are welcome, but ensure guests follow building rules. Inform them of policies on parking, noise, and amenities. Follow guest registration as required. Take responsibility for your guests to keep the building comfortable for all.

Handle Deliveries and Packages Responsibly

Online shopping means frequent package deliveries. Without prompt pickup, shared lobbies and mailrooms quickly become cluttered.

Pick up deliveries promptly and don’t leave packaging in common areas. If your building has package rooms or lockers, use them to keep things organized.

Communicate Respectfully with Neighbours

Small issues will arise, such as noise or misuse of shared spaces. Address concerns calmly and respectfully—friendly conversations resolve most problems. Involve property managers when needed.

Maintaining respectful communication helps foster a more cooperative and positive community within the building.

Following Building Rules and Policies

Each building has rules covering garbage, amenities, pets, and move procedures. Review and follow them to avoid penalties and keep the building comfortable for all.

Good apartment etiquette means recognizing that your home is part of a larger community. It is successful when everyone plays a role in fostering mutual respect and cooperation among neighbours.
